East Borneo Orangutan itinerary
East Borneo Orangutan is an Indonesian province in the east of the island of Borneo. It’s known for its Indigenous Dayak culture and rainforest areas like Kutai National Park, home to orangutans
Day 1: Balikpapan – Sangatta ( L, D )
Upon arrival at Balikpapan airport meeting service and drive to Sangatta for approximately 6 hours. Arrive in Sangatta. transfer to the hotel rest and relax.
Day 2: Sangatta – Kutai National Park (B, L, D)
early in the morning by motor canoe upstream Sangatta River into the jungle of Kutai National Reserve. Upon arrival at the prefab Orangutan research station. We will drop our stuff and start a jungle trek into the forest, looking for wildlife Orangutans, which are completely wild. Afternoon return to prefab station for lunch and rest. Late afternoon another forest trek searching for wild and experience the beauty of rainforest flora and fauna. Here stay overnight at prefab station research.
Day 3: Kutai Reserve – Delta Sangatta River – Muara Wahau (B, L, D)
after breakfast by motor canoe to the mangrove forest at the Delta of the Sangatta River to spot Longnose monkeys, Birds, Crocodiles, and other wild in the mangrove forest. Return to Sangatta for lunch and afterward transfer to Muara Wahau for overnight at hotel.
Day 4: Muara Wahau – Merabu Dayaka Villages (B, L, D)
Breakfast at the hotel, preparation for our adventure trip, check out the hotel, and drive for about 2 hours over a bouncing unpaved road into the dark jungle of Borneo. Before we head into a muddy path for about one hour’s drive time towards Merabu Dayak villages to end up at one of the side rivers of the Longgi rivers. If the water level is low we can cross the river by car, otherwise, we will leave the vehicle and cross the river by canoe to Merbabu villages which is a small settlement of about 200 people of the Dayak Lebo. Which will host us for the night at one of their local houses? Evening a dance ceremony could be held. Lunch on the way to dinner at local houses Merbabu.
Day 5: Merabu Dayak Villages – Karst Cave Beloyot (B, L, D)
simple breakfast by our local host will be prepared before we start our trek of about 3 hours. From the villages, Merbabu is located at the foot of one of the world’s largest and untouched limestone forests into the Karst mountains to the Beloyot limestone crop, which has several caves, with historic human manuscripts of 3000 years old. Besides unknown fossils, human sculptures, and lakes can be found in the several caves of the Beloyot limestone crop. Lunch and dinner will be prepared en route, overnight at Cave.
Day 6: Beloyot – Nyadeng Lake (B, L, D)
Simple breakfast at the cave before we continue trekking to Nyadeng for about 2 – 3 hours through untouched limestone forest, possibility to spot wildlife mammals as several monkey species, and lizards during the trek. Once arrive at Nyadeng you can enjoy the bright watershed lake of the karst limestone mountains, at your feet as a mirror to your face, from the lake we continue to the Poyong crop. Which holds a dry cave at about 300 meters above sea level, which gives us a nice view over the limestone forest. Possibility to overnight at the cave or continue by canoe to Merabu villages to overnight at local houses. Meals prepared route.
Day 7: Merabu – Berau (B, L)
simple breakfast at the cave or local house before we continue by car over a muddy path passing the primary forest for about 2 hours to the main road which will bring us in about 3 hours to Berau hotel and finish a program.
