Lombok is an enchanting island in Indonesia. Here, turquoise waters meet dramatic coastlines. Also, lush jungles hide peaceful waterfalls. The local Sasak culture remains beautifully preserved. Its famous neighbor, Bali, often overshadows Lombok. Yet, Lombok offers quieter beaches and uncrowded landscapes. Therefore, it provides an authentic island experience. This makes it perfect for all travelers: adventure seekers, nature lovers, couples, and families.
We made this full Lombok travel guide to help you plan a great trip. It covers everything you need for an unforgettable holiday. For example, we detail the best time to visit and how to get around. We also include a good 4-day Lombok itinerary.
Lombok serves travelers like you well. You will find beautiful and less crowded beaches. The island also offers world-class snorkeling and marine life. Plus, you can enjoy easy to hard hikes. Look for waterfalls hidden in the green forests. Finally, you can see traditional villages and local culture. You can also enjoy easy access to the Gili Islands.
Lombok is calmer and feels more natural than Bali. But it still has good places to stay. You can also find good restaurants and easy ways to get around.
Lombok has warm tropical weather all year round. Yet, the best time to visit is:
April to October – Dry Season (Best Time)
This time is perfect for outdoor activities. For example, you can enjoy beach hopping, trekking, and boating to the Gili Islands.
July & August – Peak Season
The atmosphere is lively, and the beach weather is great. Be aware, though: places to stay fill up fast during this time.
November to March – Rainy Season
You will see greener landscapes and fewer tourists. But the sea may be rough sometimes.
By Air – Lombok International Airport (LOP)
You can fly directly from several places nearby. For example, direct flights are available from Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, Yogyakarta, Kuala Lumpur, and Singapore (seasonal).
By Fast Boat from Bali
You can use a few fast boat routes to get to Lombok. For instance, you can choose Padang Bai → Gili → Lombok, Sanur → Gili → Lombok, or Serangan → Gili → Lombok. Please note: the trip takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, depending on how rough the sea is.
Getting around the island is easy. Specifically, you have several transport options to choose from.
Private Car + Driver (Recommended): First, this is the safest and best choice. Furthermore, it is efficient, especially for reaching waterfalls and southern beaches.
Motorbike Rental: However, this is only for experienced riders, since some roads are winding.
Taxi, Grab, and Gojek: Alternatively, these services are available in Mataram, Kuta, and Senggigi.
Boat Transfers: Finally, use boats for the Gili Islands and any island-hopping trips.
This area is famous for its surfing and beautiful beaches. It also has many restaurants and fun nightlife. Because of this, you can find many good places to stay here. For example, we suggest hotels like Novotel Lombok, Jivana Resort, and Origin Lombok.
Senggigi has great sunsets and many restaurants. In addition, you can easily reach the Gili Islands from here. Therefore, this makes it perfect for families and couples on their honeymoon. However, because it is so popular, we suggest several good hotels. Specifically, these include the Katamaran Resort, the Sheraton Senggigi, and Sudamala Suites.
We do offer a full itinerary. We made this trip especially for culture lovers. It is also for beach lovers and people who seek adventure.
If staying in Kuta, Lombok:
You have many good choices here. First, relax at Tanjung Aan Beach. After that, see the sunset from Bukit Merese. This is one of Lombok’s best viewing spots. Last, explore Mandalika’s beach promenade.
If staying in Senggigi:
First, stop at Nipah Hill for wide ocean views. Next, go to Senggigi Beach for a great sunset. Then, have a seafood dinner by the sea. Finally, you will sleep in either Kuta or Senggigi.
After breakfast, we drive to Central Lombok. There, we will see two of Lombok’s most beautiful waterfalls:
You will see two famous spots. First, Benang Stokel Waterfall has two falls with freshwater pools. Indeed, this is great for photos and a cool dip. Next, you will see Benang Kelambu Waterfall, which is a stunning “curtain waterfall” that runs through green plants.
While here, you can enjoy easy jungle trekking. Furthermore, you can also swim. Moreover, if you want, drone photography is an option (check local rules first). After all these activities, go back to your hotel to rest or eat dinner nearby. The day will end when you will sleep in Kuta or Senggigi.
Today, we dedicate the day to exploring the famous Gili Islands. Specifically, we will visit three islands in one day:
Our exploration begins at Gili Trawangan. Here, you can snorkel with turtles and explore the cafes and white-sand beaches. Afterward, we move to Gili Meno to visit the underwater statues and discover some of the best coral reefs. Finally, we visit Gili Air, which features smooth beaches and is perfect for lunch and additional snorkeling. For those interested, optional activities are available, such as a glass-bottom boat tour, stand-up paddle, or underwater photos. Ultimately, we return to Lombok in the late afternoon for the overnight stay in Gili Trawangan.
On your final day, explore Lombok’s rich culture and famous white-sand beaches.
