From the magical Walakiri mangroves to the crystal-clear Weekuri Lagoon and the iconic megalithic houses of Ratenggaro, every corner of Sumba is a canvas for creativity. This photography-focused itinerary is designed to help you bring home not only stunning images but also meaningful stories of people, traditions, and nature.
Day 1: Arrival – Weekuri Lake – Mandorak Beach Sunset
Arrive at Tambolaka Airport where your local guide will greet you. After lunch, head to the serene Weekuri Lake, a crystal-clear saltwater lagoon perfect for scenic shots. Next, photograph Mandorak Beach, famous for its twin rock cliffs and golden sunsets. Overnight in Southwest Sumba.

Day 2: Sunrise at Watumalandong – Ratenggaro Village – Waikelo Harbor Sunset
Begin at 3 AM to photograph Watumalandong Beach at sunrise. En route back, stop at Ratenggaro Village—home to towering traditional houses and megalithic tombs. Rest and freshen up at your hotel before heading to Waikelo Harbor to shoot boats docked against a vibrant sunset.

Day 3: Lapopu Waterfall – Praijing Village – Wairinding Hill Sunset
Depart at 4 AM for a scenic hike to Lapopu Waterfall, ideal for slow-shutter water photography. Visit Praijing Village, nestled in lush hills, where you’ll capture traditional homes and the spirit of local life. After lunch, travel to East Sumba. End the day photographing the sweeping grasslands of Wairinding Hill at sunset.

Day 4: Sunrise at Watuparunu – Ikat Culture in Prailiu – Sunset at Walakiri Beach
Wake early (1 AM) for a 3-hour drive to Watuparunu Beach to shoot its dramatic sunrise. After breakfast, visit Prailiu Village, a hub of ikat weaving and Sumbanese arts—perfect for detailed shots and portraits. End the day at Walakiri Beach, famous for its “dancing mangrove trees” silhouetted at sunset.

Day 5: Sunrise at Walakiri – Departure
Optional early shoot at Walakiri Beach for a second chance at capturing its stunning sunrise. Return to hotel for breakfast and checkout. Your driver will transfer you to Waingapu Airport for your departure.
